If you enjoy working with large vehicles and want to get more hands-on experience while fulfilling initial in-class requirements for the Level 1 Commercial Vehicle and Equipment Apprenticeship Program, then we’ve got an incredible program for you!

The Upper Canada District School Board is excited to launch the Level 1 Commercial Vehicle and Equipment Apprenticeship Program, which is available for qualified students enrolled in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program or who are working toward completing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

Set to begin in October 2021, this 10-week training program will be taught through the TR Leger School of Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education at the Kemptville Campus Education and Community Centre in Kemptville, Ontario

This fully funded program means that students will complete this program with no enrollment fee.

About the Program:

The Level 1 Commercial Vehicle and Equipment Apprenticeship program provides the basics for in-class and practical learning for three motive power trades: Agricultural Equipment Technician, Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, and Truck and Coach Technician.

The course provides students the opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge through in-class learning and with practical experiences that are specific to these related careers.

Students will take the courses’ theory portions online and participate in hands-on learning at the Kemptville Campus training facility.

This program will allow full-time adult students working toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma as well as high school students to gain experience and complete Level 1 training requirements in Truck and Coach Technician, Heavy Equipment Technician, and Agricultural Equipment Technician though the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).

Eligible Applicants

  • Is a secondary school student currently working towards their OSSD, is registered in OYAP and has successfully completed a co-op placement in the Trade
  • Is 20 years of age or younger and has earned their OSSD
  • Is 21 years of age or older and has not earned their OSSD or equivalent

AND

  • Demonstrates strong observational, analytical skills and can work independently
  • Is enrolled as a part-time or full-time student at a secondary school institution

Applicants will then complete the process to enroll in the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Don’t worry - our OYAP coordinators will support you through this application process!

  • Program Duration: 10 weeks, running from mid-October to mid-December 2021.
  • Location: TR Leger School Adult & Continuing Education Kemptville Campus Education and Community Centre, P&E Building, Kemptville
  • Duration: Consists of 240 total hours which includes 84 practical hours.

Courses

Students enrolled in the Level 1 Commercial Vehicle and Equipment Program will complete the following units:

Trade Practice:

Students will learn occupational health and safety, precision measuring tools, fastening devices and torqueing procedures, bearings, seals and sealants, as well as the oxy-fuel processes.

40 hours total (24 theory hours; 16 practical hours)

Fluid Power Systems:

Students will learn about fluid power fundamentals, fluid power component and graphic symbols, fluid power principles of operation, fluid power hydraulic fluids and filters, fluid power conductors and connectors, and fluid power maintenance schedule.

24 hours total (19 theory hours; 5 practical hours)

Engine Systems:

This course will cover engine operation fundamentals, engine component fundamentals and engine system identification, maintenance and service procedures

40 hours total (22 theory hours; 18 practical hours)

Electrical Systems:

Students will receive an introduction to electricity as well as learn about electrical laws, electrical test equipment and electronic service tools, electrical circuits and calculations, electrical circuits and protective devices, electrical circuit repair, electromagnetic devices, and battery fundamentals.

48 hours total (33 theory hours; 15 practical hours)

Fuel Systems:

Students will learn about the following topics in this course: fundamentals of diesel fuel systems, diesel fuel injection principles, diesel fuel injection sub-systems, and diesel hydraulic injectors.

24 hours total (18 theory hours, 6 practical hours)

Drive Train Systems:

This course will cover push-type clutch and flywheel assemblies, gearing fundamentals, single countershaft manual transmissions, drive shafts, power take-off shafts and universal joints as well as single reduction drive axle assemblies.

32 hours total (24 theory hours, 8 practical hours)

Wheel End Assemblies & Brake Systems:

Wheel end assemblies, hydraulic brake systems and air brake systems will be covered in this course.

32 hours total (16 theory hours, 16 practical hours)

Who can apply?

All Suitable Candidates is one of the following:

  • Is a secondary school student currently working towards their OSSD, is registered in OYAP and has successfully completed a co-op placement in the Trade

How do I apply?

If you’re a student currently enrolled in high school: please contact your guidance counsellor about getting set up with the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program and co-op.

If you’re an adult who hasn’t earned your Ontario Secondary School Diploma: please register here (include link), and our team will support you through the application process and eligibility requirements.

How much does it cost?

This program is currently funded by the provincial government. Students enrolled in the program will not pay fees to complete this program.

Where can I work after completing this program?

In order to work as a Truck and Coach Technician, Heavy Equipment Technician, or Agricultural Equipment Technician, you must have a Red Seal certification. This Level 1 program is the first step to completing the mandatory apprenticeship program for these three certifications.

If you are considering a future in this field, you may find a at farm equipment dealerships or truck dealerships.
